[237120, A2] Wk 5: Task 1 – Visual Literacy Discussion
In his TED Talk on ‘The Power to Tell the Difference: Visual Literacy in a Visual Age,’ Don
Levy discusses – among other topics –
the need for an anchor in the world. This anchor refers to a grounded base in reality, in the face of an onslaught of visual influence from media culture presenting a false reality. This relates to my visual text entitled ‘The Scramble for Africa’ by Yinka Shonibare MBE. The piece utilises historical fact in his work as an anchor – an undisputed truth on which he projects his interpretation – thereby achieving the balance Levy discusses between fact and fiction.
